Clarence Hewlett is an American player, tournament director, organizer, and theoretician. Former editor of Othello Quarterly. Member U.S. team 1990 WOC (Stockholm), placed 31st individually. He died at the age of 85 in his home on August 6, 2006. Othello was mentioned prominently in his obituary in the local Staunton, Virginia paper as his contribution to it was a large source of pride for him. Before modern computers, Clarence had built an endgame analyzer with specially tuned circuit boards and hardware that, at the time, was the fastest solver of Othello endgames in the world.
Clarence worked at General Electric during his career, and worked directly on the World War II "Manhattan Project." In addition to Othello, Clarence was a master-level chess player and solver of Rubik's cube type games. He will be missed. Categories: Table judge WOC 1993
